US lifts sanctions on Syrian president ahead of White House meeting with President Trump

The US State Department announced President Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former member of al Qaeda who led the rebels in their ousting of former prez Bashar al-Assad, is no longer designated a “global terrorist.”
