OpenAI’s GPT-5 Launch Unveiled Amid Anticipation

OpenAI is set to launch its highly anticipated GPT-5 model today, August 7, 2025. A now-deleted blog post on GitHub prematurely disclosed essential details, including that GPT-5 features “major improvements in reasoning, code quality, and user experience,” and will be available in four distinct versions, reports 24brussels.

The announcement was first spotted by Reddit users, who noted the blog post that declared GPT-5 is now generally available in GitHub models. An archived version of the post revealed that this model is designed to handle “complex coding tasks with minimal prompting” and boasts what is described as “enhanced agentic capabilities.”

The four variants of GPT-5 include:

  • gpt-5: Designed for logic and multi-step tasks.
  • gpt-5-mini: A lightweight version for cost-sensitive applications.
  • gpt-5-nano: Optimized for speed and low latency applications.
  • gpt-5-chat: Tailored for advanced, natural, multimodal, and context-aware conversations for enterprise use.

In previous announcements, OpenAI hinted at the launch of GPT-5 earlier this month, indicating that this version would come with mini and nano models available via its API. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had teased developments in the lead-up to the launch.

The launch event is scheduled for 10AM PT / 1PM ET, a moment that marks a significant milestone following the recent release of two open-weight models by OpenAI, suitable for local PC operation.
