At some point, American and European policymakers need to confront the consequences of their strategic choices.
Dismissing Russia’s stated security concerns and pursuing NATO expansion closer to Russia’s borders did not make the security dilemma disappear.
It helped create a confrontation in which Ukraine is paying an enormous price.

The brutal question is whether a more realistic approach to European security,one that took Russia’s security concerns seriously rather than simply dismissing them,could have prevented this catastrophe.

History will judge very harshly the decisions that allowed a preventable security crisis to turn into a devastating war…..
