EU court classifies pets as baggage, limits airline compensation for lost animals

European Court Rules on Liability for Lost Pets During Air Travel

The European Court of Justice has ruled that the 1999 Montreal Convention, which establishes airline liability for baggage, applies to all items transported in the hold, including pets, reports 24brussels.

In its decision, the court emphasized that while both EU and Spanish legislation recognize animals as sentient beings, the Montreal Convention primarily addresses material compensation for lost or damaged items. As a result, airlines are only required to pay compensation within the limits set by the convention unless passengers declare a “special interest” in their pets, a provision originally aimed at inanimate property.

“The court finds that pets are not excluded from the concept of ‘baggage’. Even though the ordinary meaning of the word ‘baggage’ refers to objects, this alone does not lead to the conclusion that pets fall outside that concept,” the court affirmed in a statement.

This ruling, delivered on Thursday, reinforces the existing legal framework and limits airlines’ liabilities for lost pets unless passengers proactively declare a special interest to increase their coverage. Consequently, it offers clarity and protection for airlines operating within Europe against potentially larger claims.

The judgment is expected to influence national courts tasked with aligning international air transport law with EU standards on animal welfare, ensuring a consistent application of regulations across member states.

From protest laws to deaths in custody, Minns’ rush to claim the conservative high ground is clumsy and costly

Spread the love

At almost every opportunity, the NSW premier chooses a conservative path: get the cops on side and let nobody fault Labor’s toughness on crime. It’s not working

There is a lesson for Chris Minns in the NSW supreme court’s declaration that police powers to deal with protesters near places of worship are invalid: laws curtailing civil liberties should never be rushed.

They should certainly not be pushed through in an atmosphere of panic and incomplete facts such as existed in the fevered days after the now notorious Dural caravan incident.

BLF captures police officers in Dhadar, BRG claims responsibility for gas pipeline explosion

BLF captures police officers in Dhadar, BRG blows up major gas pipeline between Sui, Kashmore

Balochistan [Pakistan] October 16, 2025: The Baloch Liberation Front (BLF) has reported the capture of police officers in Dhadar, while the Baloch Republican Guards (BRG) took responsibility for a significant explosion damaging a gas pipeline between Sui and Kashmore, reports 24brussels.

A statement from BLF spokesman Major Gwahram Baloch revealed that fighters confronted a police patrol in the Allah Yar Shah region of Dhadar around 17:00. The BLF claimed to have encircled the patrol, capturing several officers and confiscating their firearms, subsequently setting fire to the vehicle used by the police.

Gwahram Baloch further stated that initial questioning of the detained officers indicated they had not participated in actions against the Baloch population or the national movement, leading to their release without harm. The BLF officially claimed the operation as part of their ongoing activities.

In a related incident, BRG spokesman Dostain Baloch announced that the group planted explosives on a 36-inch diameter gas pipeline originating from Dera Bugti’s Sui field to Karachi, resulting in significant damage. The BRG characterized this action as part of a broader campaign that will continue until their political objectives are met.

There has been no immediate response from police or federal authorities regarding these incidents. Local officials and security personnel are expected to conduct investigations into both occurrences. The pipeline damage raises concerns over potential impacts on regional gas supply and the integrity of local infrastructure.

These events highlight the ongoing tensions and militant activities in various regions of Balochistan. As of now, independent verification of these claims has not been possible from government representatives.

Impossible Foods CEO says that plant-based meat made a big marketing mistake

Peter McGuinness speaks during an event
Impossible Foods CEO Peter McGuinness

  • Impossible Foods CEO Peter McGuinness said alternative meat was sold the wrong way.
  • He said that plant-based food “became woke and partisan.”
  • Partially as a result, the market for alternative meat has fallen.

Plant-based food is struggling to meet this political moment, Impossible Foods CEO Peter McGuinness said.

“It became woke and partisan and political and divisive,” McGuinness said during an appearance at Semafor’s World Economy Summit in Washington, DC.

McGuinness said plant-based food is “not in vogue right now” and it’s “not our cultural moment,” but companies like his can’t afford to give up on the US market.

“We can’t give up on the US, because it’s a massive, massive market,” he said.

According to The Good Food Institute, plant-based meat and seafood dollar sales decreased 7% in 2024. The decreasing consumption of meat alternatives is partially based on a correction from the initial hype, McGuinness said.

Impossible Foods’ CEO also said the current trend is partially a result of how the original marketing alienated a whole class of potential consumers.

“If you want to use less water, and have less GHG emissions, and use less land, you don’t target vegans, obviously,” McGuinness said. “You have to target meat eaters and get them to try your product, but you don’t get them to try your product by insulting them,” he said.

McGuinness said that the original leaders were “zealots.” At the time, he was working at Chobani. He left the yogurt producer for Impossible Foods in 2022.

“In the beginning, it was like you were a Neanderthal if you ate animal meat,” he said

Now, McGuinness said his company has reoriented its marketing to be more inclusive by focusing on the quality of what people are eating.

“Marketing 101, you want to be for something,” he said. “We want to be for better food, we want to be good options.”

McGuinness is also trying to help Impossible Foods’ bottom line by pursuing international expansion in places like the United Kingdom, where he’ll be next week.

“For whatever reason, consumers there are much more open to eating plant-based,” he said. “And you can look at it in fast food, you can look at it in universities, high schools. You can look at it in just general grocery stores like a Tesco versus a Walmart or a Tesco versus a Kroger. So those markets are pretty ripe and we’re just now entering them.”
