India, Jordan reaffirm commitment to strengthen bilateral cooperation across key sectors

Amman, October 14, 2025 – India and Jordan have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation across various sectors during a meeting between Indian Secretary (South) Neena Malhotra and Jordanian officials, including Secretary General Daifallah Ali Al-Fayez, on October 13. This engagement coincides with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations, reports 24brussels.

The discussions took place in a cordial atmosphere, focusing on the full spectrum of bilateral ties, encompassing political, economic, trade, defense, cultural, and people-to-people cooperation. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the traditional friendship between India and Jordan and emphasized their intent to further strengthen this partnership.

Attention was also directed towards regional and global issues of mutual concern, including the situation in West Asia. The officials stressed the significance of dialogue, diplomacy, and peaceful conflict resolution. Furthermore, they agreed to maintain regular communications between their respective ministries and to schedule the next round of Foreign Office Consultations in New Delhi next year.

During her visit, Secretary Malhotra engaged with the Indian diaspora, the local business community, and representatives in academia and culture at a reception hosted by the Indian Embassy. She commended their contributions to deepening the bilateral relationship.

In upcoming meetings, Secretary Malhotra will discuss a Twinship Agreement between Agra and Petra with Fares Braizat, Chief Commissioner of the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority. This engagement follows the Foreign Office Consultations held in April 2025, where both nations reviewed their comprehensive ties and addressed shared perspectives on regional and global interests.

Officials remarked that the two countries are committed to commemorating their 75 years of diplomatic relations with a series of events, aiming to highlight the growing economic partnership. The Ministry of External Affairs noted that India is now Jordan’s fourth-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching USD 2.8 billion in 2023-24. Both countries underscored the necessity of diversifying economic cooperation and promoting mutual investments.

Secretary Malhotra also plans to visit the India-Jordan Centre for Excellence in IT at Al-Hussein Technical University, an institution established with Indian assistance that serves as a hub for advanced learning.

Starmer Engages Global Leaders at Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit

Prime Minister Keir Starmer engaged in crucial discussions with leaders from Qatar, Türkiye, and France at the Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit, strengthening international efforts for a lasting ceasefire in the Middle East, reports 24brussels.

During his meeting with Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar, Starmer praised the Amir’s personal contributions, alongside other influential leaders from Türkiye, Egypt, and the United States, in achieving significant progress. “This is a turning point for the Middle East, after months of horror and suffering,” the Prime Minister stated, referencing the release of hostages and the delivery of aid to Gaza.

Both leaders emphasized the importance of transforming this moment into a sustainable peace while the UK has pledged to support the next phase of recovery. Starmer confirmed the UK’s commitment to participating in the reconstruction efforts in Gaza, a ceasefire monitoring mission, and the decommissioning of Hamas to mitigate future threats.

Starmer also met with President Erdoğan of Türkiye, commending his crucial role in facilitating the ceasefire and concluding the ongoing conflict. The two parties recognized the need for sustained efforts towards implementing peace initiatives and addressed their intent to enhance defense cooperation.

In discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron, the leaders celebrated the recent positive developments, including aid flows into Gaza and the poignant reunification of hostages with their families. Both officials acknowledged the critical mediation efforts by former President Trump, alongside representatives from Qatar, Egypt, and Türkiye, that led to this initial phase of peace.

“The UK stands ready to take a leadership role in the upcoming stages,” Starmer reiterated, highlighting the dual objectives of decommissioning Hamas and supporting Gaza’s reconstruction along with ongoing ceasefire monitoring efforts.

Army Chiefs of India and France meet to strengthen defence ties, counter-terrorism cooperation and UN peacekeeping efforts

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi met his French counterpart, General Pierre Schill, Chief of Staff of the French Army (CEMAT), on the sidelines of the United Nations Chiefs of the Counter-Terrorism Conference 2025, reports 24brussels.

The meeting focused on enhancing the robust Indo-French strategic partnership, with discussions centered on expanding joint training exercises, counter-terrorism cooperation, and collaboration in defense technology. The Army’s Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADG PI) noted that both leaders emphasized the importance of improved interoperability in UN peacekeeping operations.

This engagement follows General Dwivedi’s visit to France earlier this year, a pivotal step in advancing bilateral defense cooperation. On February 25, 2025, he visited Marseille to gain insight into the French Army’s 3rd Division, took part in the joint exercise SHAKTI, and observed the modernization initiative known as “Scorpion.” The visit included a live demonstration in Carpiagne.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Defence, General Dwivedi’s itinerary included meetings with senior French military officials at Les Invalides, beginning with a Guard of Honour and subsequently discussions with General Schill aimed at strengthening military ties. He also toured the Ecole Militaire in Paris, received briefings on the Future Combat Command, and visited the Battle Lab Terre in Versailles, indicating a deepening technological and operational collaboration.

During his time in France, General Dwivedi honored Indian soldiers from World War I at the Neuve Chapelle Indian War Memorial and delivered a lecture at the Ecole de Guerre, discussing modern warfare and India’s strategic vision. His visit coincided with a recent Bilateral Dialogue on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation held in Paris on February 14, where key topics included developments in nuclear, chemical, and biological disarmament, outer space security, and the role of Artificial Intelligence in military applications.

This continued engagement through high-level visits and defense dialogues highlights the growing strategic partnership between India and France, underpinned by mutual trust and a commitment to enhancing global peace and security.
