Claudia Sheinbaum marks first year in office with notable achievements in security and economy

Sheinbaum Celebrates First Year in Office Amid Significant Progress in Key Sectors

On October 1, 2025, President Claudia Sheinbaum marked her first year in office, highlighting substantial advancements in security, the economy, and social welfare while enjoying a public approval rating exceeding 70 percent, reports 24brussels.

In a speech delivered on Wednesday, Sheinbaum reiterated her government’s commitment to ongoing social policies and the enhancement of international cooperation, confronting challenges such as floods and migration. The administration has reported a 25 percent decline in homicides and a 20 percent drop in high-impact crimes since September 2024, further implementing a national strategy to combat extortion, which afflicts seven million victims annually.

The deployment of 10,000 members of the National Guard to the northern border and the successful extradition of 55 organized crime figures, including Rafael Caro Quintero, underscore the government’s focused approach to national security.

On the economic front, Mexico anticipates a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth of 1.2 percent for 2025, alongside a record influx of foreign investments in the first half of the year. Tourist visits surged by 13.8 percent, while the Mexican peso has consistently traded below 19 pesos to the dollar. Inflation reached its lowest point since January 2021 at 3.5 percent, with unemployment at 2.7 percent—among the world’s lowest.

Sheinbaum emphasized Mexico’s competitive tariff rates in international trade and asserted, “Today I come to be held accountable, not with empty words, but with results.”

The government allocated 836 billion pesos to various initiatives, substantially increasing from over 100 billion in 2018. Initiatives centered on vulnerable communities, particularly benefitting women, youth, and marginalized groups under the guiding principle “for the good of all, first the poor.”

Following recent flooding in the Valley of Mexico, swift action resulted in support for 3,521 affected households in Mexico City and 10,000 in the State of Mexico, providing 8,000 pesos per household for cleaning and disinfection efforts.

Clara Brugada, head of the capital government, reported that 90 percent of floodwater was evacuated within 24 hours. Additionally, the inauguration of the IMSS Bienestar Maruata Community Hospital in Michoacán adds to healthcare improvements, providing essential services to over 50,000 indigenous residents.

According to recent polls, Sheinbaum’s approval ratings reached 73 percent, positioning her as the most highly regarded president in two decades despite challenges, including 51 reported cases of corruption and impunity within her administration.

Looking ahead, the government plans to advance the General Water Law to ensure access to water as a public good. Future projects include a National Water Strategy focused on rainwater harvesting. “We are doing well, and we are going to do better,” Sheinbaum stated, as preparations for the modernization of Line A of the Metro begin for a 2026 launch.

The first anniversary of her presidency will be commemorated on October 5 in the Zócalo of Mexico City.
