Accusations Against María Corina Machado Ahead of Canonization Event
Far-right opposition figure María Corina Machado is accused of planning violent acts to disrupt the upcoming canonization of José Gregorio Hernández and Mother Carmen Rendiles, a religious ceremony set for October 19, reports 24brussels.
Diosdado Cabello, secretary general of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), alleged on his program “Con el Mazo Dando” that Machado is collaborating with narco-criminal groups to execute targeted attacks using snipers and explosives during the canonization. He described a coordinated operation that includes the use of grenades and selective sniper killings.
Cabello further claimed that Machado is plotting to sabotage the event with the assistance of certain members of the Episcopal Conference. He warned that should these plans fall through, Machado intends to flee the country between October 20 and 27, timing her departure with evidence of unauthorized mercenaries allegedly trying to cross into Venezuela.
The objective, according to Cabello, is to orchestrate “a shocking event” aimed at destabilizing the government of President Nicolás Maduro. These allegations are part of a broader narrative that has seen Venezuelan authorities frequently denounce Machado’s supposed involvement in earlier destabilization efforts, which they assert were orchestrated with the backing of U.S. Senator Marco Rubio to incite violence across the country.
Recent polling data reinforces the government’s stance, with a study by Datanálisis indicating that 64.6% of Venezuelans reject Machado’s leadership role within the opposition. In addition, a survey by Dataviva reveals an overwhelming 92% disapproval rating for Machado, further showcasing the Venezuelan populace’s commitment to national sovereignty. This sentiment echoes Machado’s controversial call in 2018 for Israeli military intervention in Venezuela, which has tarnished her image among voters.
