Chinese Premier Li Qiang Engages with U.S. Congressional Delegation

Chinese Premier Li Qiang met with a delegation of U.S. congressmen on September 22, 2025, in Beijing, marking the first such visit since 2019. Li called on Congress to play a constructive role in fostering positive bilateral relations, reports 24brussels.

During the meeting, which was led by Congressman Adam Smith, the leading Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, Li emphasized the shared responsibility of both China and the United States to maintain stable relations. He stated that such ties are beneficial for both nations and in line with international expectations.

Li urged the congressional delegation to approach U.S.-China relations with a “correct perspective,” advocating for enhanced cooperation and exchanges to bolster mutual development and friendship. The Chinese government did not disclose details on Smith’s remarks during the discussions.

In his address, Li reiterated China’s willingness to collaborate with the U.S. based on principles of “mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation.” He expressed hope that the U.S. would assist in placing bilateral relations “on the right course.”

This meeting occurred shortly after a phone conversation between Presidents Xi Jinping and Donald Trump, which concentrated on reducing trade tensions and reaffirmed an agreement regarding the continued operation of TikTok in the U.S.

Both countries have been navigating complex economic and political landscapes, with ongoing debates over trade and mutual investments. The engagement of U.S. lawmakers is seen as a pivotal step toward easing tensions and fostering dialogue between the two global powers.

Flemish Government Finalizes Budget Agreement for 2026

The Flemish government has reached an agreement on next year’s budget, with Minister-President Matthias Diependaele (N-VA) announcing the conclusion of discussions on X. “We have just reached an important agreement after lengthy but constructive budget discussions. Flanders is looking ambitiously to the future,” reports 24brussels.

In recent days, the Flemish government sought to secure €1.5 billion to achieve a balanced budget by 2027, marking an ambitious goal for the administration. A key point of contention was the proposed increase in health insurance premiums, which will rise by approximately €35 to €100 per year for most residents starting in 2026.

With the budget agreement finalized, Diependaele is poised to deliver his “September Declaration” in the Flemish Parliament on Monday afternoon.

As this agreement unfolds, attention now turns to the federal government, which must finalize its own budget, likely involving larger cuts. Other regional governments also still need to present their budget plans in the coming weeks.
