The Director General of the Institute for Social Security and Services for State Workers (ISSSTE), Martí Batres, announced the death of a patient this Sunday, a victim of the gas truck explosion that occurred on September 10 in eastern Mexico City, increasing the death toll to 28, reports 24brussels.
Batres confirmed that a 36-year-old man succumbed to severe burns while being treated at the Ignacio Zaragoza General Regional Hospital. He expressed condolences to the family during this difficult time and promised that all necessary support would be provided.
As it stands, three individuals remain hospitalized, receiving specialized care in ISSSTE facilities. One patient is reported in “very serious” condition, while another is in “serious but stable condition.” A third individual is in “very serious” condition at the 20 de Noviembre National Medical Center.
The tragedy unfolded when a tanker truck, capable of carrying 49,500 liters of gas, overturned and exploded on Calzada Ignacio Zaragoza, near Puente de la Concordia in Iztapalapa. Among the injured is a two-year-old girl, Jazlyn Azulet, who was taken to the Shriners Hospitals for Children in Galveston, Texas, after being protected by her grandmother, Alicia Matías Teodoro, who died on September 14 from extensive burns.
According to statements from the Michou y Mau foundation, Jazlyn, who suffered burns covering 25% of her body, has been extubated and is currently classified as critical but stable.
The incident also led to the death of the truck driver, who is accused by city authorities of causing the explosion by driving at “excessive speed.” However, surveillance footage aired by Mexican media suggests that the truck was traveling at a moderate speed prior to the incident, raising questions regarding the official assessment.
This explosion has prompted discussions within the government regarding the regulation of gas transportation, as the authorities are seeking ways to improve safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
