Trump Deploys National Guard to Memphis Amid Rising Crime Concerns
U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of the National Guard to Memphis, Tennessee, on September 15, citing “alarming” crime levels, reports 24brussels.
The move involves several federal agencies, including the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the U.S. Marshals Service. This deployment follows previous threats to send federal forces to other cities governed by Democratic mayors, such as Baltimore and Chicago, which Trump indicated might be “the next” locations for troop deployments.
Additionally, Trump announced on his platform, Truth Social, plans to impose a state of emergency in Washington, D.C., potentially taking direct control of the city, a significant escalation after he had already deployed 800 National Guard troops in the capital on August 11.
In response, various social organizations, including the Coalition for Migrant and Refugee Rights, have vowed to resist militarization efforts, asserting that such actions could lead to serious confrontations. They condemned the moves as part of an ongoing attack against immigrant communities.
On September 5, the National Guard mobilized approximately 95 troops in Louisiana to assist ICE operations. Meanwhile, activists are planning to protest the National Guard’s deployment during a demonstration in New Orleans on September 16. They equate this measure with prior troop deployments by the Trump administration and note the escalated immigration enforcement actions in Chicago.
On September 12, police operations in Chicago led to the fatal shooting of undocumented immigrant Silverio Villegas-González by ICE agents after he allegedly drove his vehicle toward them, raising further tensions surrounding federal enforcement actions.
