Travis Kelce got home-field advantage when popping the question to Taylor Swift.
The Kansas City tight end proposed to his pop star girlfriend in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, his father Ed Kelce said in a Wednesday interview with News 5’s John Kosich.
The older Kelce, who joked to the outlet that he didn’t know how much he was supposed to share but didn’t care, said the couple got engaged two weeks ago in a garden in Lee’s Summit. The city is a suburb of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area.
“He was going to put it off till this week. I think she was getting maybe a little antsy, but he was going to put her off till this week, to, you know, make some grand thing, to make it a big special event,” Kelce said to News 5.
He said he told his son repeatedly that he could propose on the “side of the road,” and that it would still be a special event.
He said Travis got Swift out to the garden as they were heading to dinner, telling her it was to have a glass of wine. He then got down on one knee.
In Swift’s engagement announcement on Instagram, the couple was in a lush garden surrounded by flowers.
Lee’s Summit, which has a population of about 106,000, is less than 20 miles from Leawood, Kansas, where Kelce’s $6 million mansion is located.
Ed Kelce told News 5 that he was at a Philadelphia Eagles public practice when he heard from the couple.
“I got a FaceTime call from them. And as soon as I saw the FaceTime, I saw it was Travis, and then I saw Taylor there with him, I knew what they were going to say,” he said.
He said he knew they were going to get engaged months ago, because it was “obvious that they were just crazy about each other.”
The couple started dating in 2023. They have not been shy about public appearances, with Kelce showing up at several of Swift’s concerts, and Swift cheering him on at his matches.
Kelce proposed to Swift with a ring that, according to a jewelry expert Business Insider spoke to, features a 9-carat diamond and is estimated to cost about $1 million.
Swift, who is set to release her latest album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” on October 3, has an estimated net worth of $1.6 billion, per Forbes.
Representatives for Swift and Kelce did not respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.
