Critical incident investigation declared into arrest of former Greens candidate who says she could lose sight in right eye

Lawyers are investigating whether protesters could sue New South Wales police over alleged excessive use of force during a pro-Palestine protest in Sydney, after which the former Greens candidate Hannah Thomas said she could lose sight in her right eye.

Thomas, 35, who ran against the prime minister at the federal election, was arrested at the Belmore protest which was attended by about 60 people on Friday. She was subsequently taken to hospital and underwent surgery.

Education secretary says she hopes new nurseries will make it easier for those who want children, after ‘worrying’ fall in birthrate

Bridget Phillipson has expressed concern at the UK’s falling birthrate, with the education secretary saying she wanted more young people to have children.

In an article for the Daily Telegraph, written to promote a government policy of providing new nursery places inside about 200 schools across England, Phillipson said she hoped to make it easier for people to have children.

Health and environmental alerts issued with high temperatures expected in France, Italy, Portugal and Spain

Large parts of Europe continue to be gripped by a heatwave today, with temperatures in mid to high 30s and low 40s Celsius and a range of health and environmental alerts issued across the continent, particularly its southern part.

France, Italy, Portugal and Spain, in particular, have seen extreme weathers over the weekend and they are likely to continue today.
