Team USA clinched their first Ice Hockey World Championship in 92 years after defeating Switzerland 1-0 in the tournament’s final. Buffalo Sabres forward Tage Thompson scored the decisive goal 2:02 into overtime to give the Americans the all-important lead at Avicii Arena. The goal came from a slick move from the US, with passes from Logan Cooley and Brady Skjei eventually finding Thompson, who fired past the Swiss goalkeeper. Team USA players held up the No.13 jersey of Johnny Gaudreau, the former USA hockey star who tragically died last August after he and his brother were struck by an alleged drunken driver. San Jose Sharks and Team USA coach Ryan Warsofsky paid tribute to Gaudreau, noting that the former NHL player was “up there watching this one.” Team USA was named world champion in 1960 for winning Olympic gold after the world championships weren’t held; however, this is the country’s first title on ice since 1933. Earlier in the day, Sweden defeated Denmark 6-2 in the bronze medal match, with fourth place being Denmark’s best-ever finish at the event.
